Course Description
This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of an Incident Safety Officer (ISO) in accordance with NFPA 1521. The training focuses on risk management, scene safety, hazard identification, and the authority and responsibilities of the ISO during emergency and non-emergency incidents. Emphasis is placed on protecting personnel, the public, and property while supporting safe incident operations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose and scope of NFPA 1521.
- Describe the roles, authority, and responsibilities of an Incident Safety Officer.
- Identify hazards and unsafe acts at emergency and planned incident scenes.
- Apply risk management principles to support safe operations.
- Monitor incident conditions and recommend corrective actions.
- Communicate safety concerns effectively within the incident command system (ICS).
Prerequisite
- None required.
- Recommended: basic knowledge of emergency response operations and the Incident Command System (ICS).

Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course receive an Apexis Certificate of Completion – NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer.
Recommended Recertification: Every 2–3 years or following updates to NFPA standards or organizational emergency procedures.
